The journey of the Scroll Trellis® originated from Diane’s quest for a tall, narrow trellis to cultivate clematis, a search that proved futile in the market. Larry, driven by the need for an optimal material to support clematis, embarked on the task of designing a prototype.
At that time, the couple enjoyed a shade garden beneath their deck, adorned with a swinging chair for relaxation. However, they faced challenges with unappealing bare deck posts and a lack of privacy in their new housing development. Diane envisioned a trellis matching the height of the deck posts (10 ft) to adorn them with flowers, creating a picturesque view and offering privacy. The challenge was finding a trellis of approximately 9 ft height and 4-inch width to fit their unique requirements.
Larry’s research led him to lattice mesh as the ideal material for clematis, considering how they climb using their leaf stems. Not only did the lattice grid size prove suitable, but Larry also discovered that the chosen lattice did not heat up in the sun, preventing damage to the vines. Considering clematis’ susceptibility to wilt, potentially due to mold, Larry designed brackets to mount the lattice mesh with a 2-inch offset, ensuring healthy airflow. The prototype was crafted, installed on one of the deck posts, and tested successfully by Diane with a Clematis Hagley Hybrid.
From this innovative solution, the Scroll Trellis® was born. Over the past 11 years, countless homes have embraced Scroll Trellises®, supporting plants and transforming gardens. The couple extends their gratitude to fellow gardeners for their unwavering support.
