Why carriers use it
For large but light parcels, carriers charge by the space the box takes up, not its actual weight. Your billable weight is the greater of actual and dimensional weight. The standard DIM divisor is 139 for domestic US air; some services use 166. Check your carrier.
How dimensional weight is calculated
Multiply length by width by height to get the cubic size in cubic inches, then divide by the DIM divisor to get the dimensional weight in pounds. Compare it to your actual weight, whichever is higher is what you pay to ship. Right-sizing your box is the easiest way to cut shipping cost.
